  • Quarr Abbey launch a new CD of Gregorian Chant

The monks of Quarr Abbey are faithful to the tradition of their mother-house, Solesmes (France), which has been the world centre for study and performance of Gregorian Chant since 1833. At Quarr, every day, the community sing the praises of God and prays for the needS of the world making use of the old Latin chant of the Roman Catholic Church. This was composed mainly between the 6th and the 8th centuries and rediscovered during the 19th century.

The CD “Songs of Mercy” intends to provide an experience of this unique meditative way of singing and praying. It includes chants which are all sung at the abbey throughout the year. They have been grouped under the common heading of Mercy. The Catholic Church is celebrating a special “Holy Year of Mercy” from 8th December 2015 till 20th November 2016. Mercy is an obvious need in our violent world very much thirsting for reconciliation and healing. This CD is a contribution towards this spiritual endeavour. By listening to the chant, we are invited to let our hearts be touched by God’s mercy and ourselves become merciful. You are also invited to a concrete work of mercy: if you buy the CD, 5% of the sale price will go to a charity supporting people in need.

The CD is sung by 5 monks and a friend of the abbey. The vocal tuition was given by Linda Filby-Borrett (Ryde). It was recorded on 11th and 12th April 2016 in the abbey church by Claydon Connor and Guy page from Isle of Wight Recording, Studio 5A (Cowes). It was designed Steve Collins (Apse Heath) and produced by Peter Downing from Island CD (Lake). It includes a booklet in which you can find a general introduction as well as the Latin text and an English translation of all pieces.

It will be officially launched on Tuesday 26th July from 10.30 am to 1 pm and from 2.30 pm to 4. 30pm in the Archway meeting room of the Abbey. The launch will include an exhibition of old books and documents concerning Gregorian Chant. A short performance by the Schola of the monastery will take place at 12 noon and 3.30 pm.

Visitors will benefit on that day of the special launch-price of £10. The CD will afterwards be on sale in the Tea-Shop and in the Monastery Shop at Quarr Abbey. Price : £12.50.
