Translating the Silence – A poetry reading with Maggie Sawkins and Blake Everitt.

Maggie Sawkins is the recipient of a Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. Her fourth collection The House Where Courage Lives compassionately addresses concerns that haunt us all: isolation and freedom, hope and despair, the ways we fill our time. Central to this collection of narrative and spiritual verse, is the question asked of Quarr Abbey monks: ‘Why did you come; why did you stay?’

Blake Everitt is an Isle of Wight poet whose work is a testament to his communion with the natural world. His meditative poems, arising from close observation and an appreciative ear for the ‘music of wildness’, are fine-tuned hymns to nature. His new collection is The Grammar of Ferns.

Easter Message 2026

Easter at Quarr is a good season to learn again that
Flowers open after winter months of apparent death,
Birds sing joyfully as they build new nests for their little ones to come,
Lambs gamble and bleat in the meadows.
Even roads reopen (!) giving access to visitors old and new – all welcome!

Will our hearts open, too,
To make peace after conflicts and wars
To forgive after disputes
To foster every human life from its conception to its natural end,
To bring a smile of hope on all faces around?

“Christ is risen from the dead.”
Happy Easter to you all!
